In 1991, Maryland cracked down on oregano profiteering, mandating a $500 fine and/or a one-year jail sentence for the sale of oregano or parsley if it were packaged to look like illegal drugs. Representative Kweisi Mfume of Maryland proposed the Beeper Abuse Prevention Act in 1991 to ban teenagers from owning electronic beepers and to require a seven-day waiting period and a criminal check for beeper purchasers with violators subject to up to three years in prison.

Americans are also dying in greater numbers a result of drug-war enforcement. For example, members of Georgia's narcotics task force shot and killed 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston ... A similar fate befell 44-year-old housewife Cheryl Noel of Baltimore, who was shot and killed by police in 2005 during a 5 o'clock a.m. "flash-bang" raid of her home. Noel's husband and 19-year-old son were later charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Most [stadiums] are financed primarily through taxes or government-backed bonds ... [T]hen-Browns owner Art Modell, after financially mismanaging the team for years, needed a government bailout, which he received from the state-run Maryland Stadium Authority in the form of M&T Bank Stadium. And to get one step further back, the Maryland Stadium Authority came into existence only after Baltimore's previous NFL team, the Colts, moved to Indianapolis when the latter city—through the Marion County Capital Improvement Board—offered the club's owners a brand new stadium.
